Top military commanders from Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States recently convened in Washington, D.C., for the Trilateral Chiefs of Defense meeting, marking another significant step in strengthening their combined security. The July 2026 gathering brought together Gen. Uchikura Hiroaki, chief of staff of Japan’s Joint Staff; ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung; and U.S. Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman. They were joined by U.S. Army Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of U.S. Forces Korea; U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Jost, commander of U.S. Forces Japan; and U.S. Marine Corps. Lt. Gen. George Rowell, deputy commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

The forum reinforced their shared commitment to regional stability and to evaluate ongoing efforts to integrate their defensive capabilities. The dialogue focused on the practical implementation of security agreements reached during previous summits, including the landmark 2023 Camp David meeting and other defense talks in Tokyo.

A central topic of discussion featured North Korea’s expanding nuclear and missile capabilities, as well as other regional threats. The defense chiefs agreed to continue coordination toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The officials also reviewed the progress of Freedom Edge, a multidomain military exercise that involves coordinated training in air defense, anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction and defensive cyber operations. The defense chiefs noted that these joint exercises have dramatically increased interoperability among their respective maritime and air forces, affirming their commitment to expanding the exercise in the future.

The commanders’ sustained high-level engagement comes amid an increasingly complex geopolitical environment in the Indo-Pacific. While the meeting primarily underpinned the alliance as a tool for deterrence against the growing nuclear and ballistic missile programs of North Korea, defense analysts stressed that the alliance acts as a counterweight to other near-peer competitors.

By conducting regular and multifaceted combined exercises and holding regular consultations, the armed forces of Japan, the ROK and the U.S. are building the seamless interoperability needed to operate as a cohesive unit during a potential crisis.

The leaders agreed to hold the next iteration of the forum in 2027.
